The area for Coastal Carolina Mensa (CCM) is the tri-county area of South Carolina (Charleston, Dorchester and Berkeley), other areas with zip code 294 and the Grand Strand area with zip code 295 (Myrtle Beach, Murrell's Inlet, Garden City, Pawleys Island, Little River and Conway). |
ACTIVITIES
Mensa truly offers something for everyone. Whether you prefer to interact in person, by writing or electronically, you can probably find kindred spirits somewhere in CCM. And if what you want doesn’t exist, you can start it!
Current activities are listed on the calendar page of each month’s M-Press, the monthly newsletter. Some of CCM’s regular activities include:
Gatherings Four to six times a year, CCM has a get-together at a member’s home or sometimes at a public place. Usually there is a guest speaker who presents a program of interest and/or controversy or it can be strictly informational. Topics can range from the sublime to the ridiculous, but are always interesting. Or, perhaps it's a Games Night, where we exercise our minds and have fun playing a variety of games. Fun, rather than competition, is the order of the evening. Dress is casual, talk is abundant and everyone is invited. After the presentation, there’s a social time with snacks and beverages.
First Friday Of the Month (FFOM) This monthly event gives CCMers the opportunity to meet their fellow members at one of many inexpensive eating establishments in the area. Menus can run from pizza to Middle Eastern to Chinese food. The main attraction is not so much the food, but the interaction of members and the ensuing conversation.
Saturday Nite At Dinner (SNAD) Once a month on a Saturday night, we schedule an eating gathering at one of the better moderately priced (but not overly expensive) restaurants in the area. It gives us a chance to interact again with our fellow Mensans, but also to enjoy an excellent meal. Once more, conversation and conviviality are the main courses.
Cheep Eets Once a month, usually on the third or fourth Tuesday, we try to find very inexpensive but tasteful eating establishments in the area. Some of the more favorite places we have found are pizza buffets and Chinese food buffets. Need we say more about conversation being the star of Cheep Eets?
Holiday Party In December, CCMers gather at a member's home to celebrate the holiday season in whichever style they believe. It’s a non-denominational, non-religious get-together to thank whomever we want that we made it through another year. Sometimes we have a round-robin gift exchange and sometimes we present an original play or pageant written by local members.
Attendance is optional at any event. If a member wishes to attend an event, that's O.K. If not, that's O.K., too. Participating in any CCM activity is up to each member. Some of our members find time for most of our activities and some attend those that they can. It's up to each member as far as activity participation.
There are many other activities we have on a regularly scheduled basis. There are annual get-togethers at members’ homes such as a Progressive Dinner or Cook-Out. Also, there are many impromtu CCM events which are scheduled based on local or seasonal events in the area. Activities are listed each month in the M-Press.
